Course outline

Graphic Design is the process of visual communication through images, words, or graphic forms. It encourages you to think creatively in order to communicate ideas and concepts that can inform, challenge and transform. Graphic Design Skills (QQI Level 5) is suitable for individuals who want to build a graphic design portfolio to progress to further and or higher education and training, progress towards working as a designer, or learn design skills to use within their organisation. Learning essential skills in Adobe Creative Suite such as InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, you’ll gain practical and transferable skills using state of the art industry standard facilities that can help you start your career in Graphic Design. This is a practical course providing students with the technical graphic design skills necessary for a career in Graphic Design. The course duration is 22 weeks and students will be required to produce a variety of Graphic Design projects such as posters, logo design and stationary design. Candidates will receive certification upon successful course completion. Requirements: Basic computer and keyboard skills are essential. No prior knowledge of design software is required. Access to your own computer outside of class hours is required. Course Content Includes:

  • Evaluate the development of Graphic Design  
  • Apply and manipulate text digitally to create a graphic design solution for a given brief
  • Apply and manipulate both vector and pixel- based imagery to create a graphic design solution 
  • Use different software packages in creating graphic design solutions
  • Critically evaluate the development of a design solution and implement changes based on this appraisal
  • Produce a body of work that demonstrates graphic design solutions created for application to numerous different media
  • Demonstrate mounting and present work to an appropriate standard for a graphic design portfolio
  • Demonstrate research and linear ideas generation
