Cork Cine Club presents The Kid With a Bike  (Le Gamin au Vélo – France)on Thursday 13 December at 8pm in St. John’s Central College.   It is the last film in the Cine Club’s seventh season of the best in independent world cinema.  Stay tuned for the announcement of Season 8 which will begin on 24 January.

Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, this deeply moving and hope-filled film delves into the emotional life of an abandoned, disenfranchised 11-year-old boy.  Directed by two-time Palme d’Or winners, the Dardenne brothers, it was honoured with a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

Young Cyril  tries to find his irresponsible father who has abandoned him to a care home, and retrieve his precious bicycle. During the search he clings to hairdresser Samantha who agrees to foster him at weekends.  But Cyril won’t give up on his father – or trouble.  This social-realist drama set in the suburban-rural hinterland of the directors’ native Belgium, dwells on the theme of parent and child, and father and son.  It is raw but compassionate, naturalistic but compelling.
Typical of the Dardenne’s work, and what makes it so vibrant – along with soaring Beethoven music –  is that they ask the most urgent questions we can ask of ourselves including, what is it to be human.
Directors : Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne.  Belgium, 2011.   87 minutes.  Cert: 12A.  Language: French (subtitled).
